The KBK “School Of Champions” At The 7th World Championships – 6 World Champions!!!

Post date: Nov 05, 2013 12:11:38 AM

14 members of the Ken-Bu-Kan Sport Karate team took part in the 7th World Championships, which for the first time in nearly 30 years were hosted in England.  The competition was planned, organised and directed by Sensei Andy Michaelides and was regarded by many as being one of the best and most successful competitions ever seen!!!!  Unfortunately, there was a sacrifice this year, as Tournament Organiser Sensei Andy was unable to Coach the squad this year, which meant that the KBK Squad and the WIKF had to pull together to grind out the results without him for the first time in 10 years!!!

The KBK squad formed a strong 55 man team from the WIKF England National squad and accounted for a third of England’s total tally of Kumite medals, took two thirds of all of the World Titles won and assisted with taking all the medals from the team events.  With 6 Champions, 2 Silvers and 11 Bronze Medals, who would think this was a squad who under-performed this year!!!

A special well done to the debutants this year Jack Ward and Romahn Flemmings who were both competing at this level for the first time ever and both came back with at least one medal at World level.  Well done to everyone!!!

Although Sensei Andy was not permitted to Coach, his training and coaching throughout the year, and advice from the side lines, helped take England to 2nd spot in both Kata and in Kumite.  This was the first time in nearly 7 years that England had either not taken the top spot in Kumite or finished 2nd spot behind the host Nation.  Sensei Andy with be back to Coaching with full force in 2014 at the European Championships in Cyprus, and having already coached athletes to an impressive 26 European and 19 World titles since 2004, Sensei Andy is now even more motivated to retain top spot in the medal table.
