Just before the summer break, nine of Ken-Bu-Kan’s youngest Sport Karate team travelled to the local Meopham Open in Kent for the very first time.  A very hot day proved very hot results as the squad came home with 3 Golds, 1 Silver and 4 Bronze medals, but even better than the results were the performances of the newer and youngest team members, who helped take the club to the top of the medal table at our first outing in these Championships.

The KBK team after claiming top spot in the medal table!

Firstly the girls and Nya Enver and Souhila Sayah were both in action.   Nya returned to form to claim yet another Gold medal in her young career with some fantastic kicks and without losing a point!  Six year old Souhila’s first open competition proved a success not only to reach the quarter-finals but impressively scored a head kick in the bout.  Nya than fought in the section above along with Layla Sayah, but both girls lost at the quarter-final stage.  Layla also fought up to claim her very first medal in an open Championships, a well-deserved Bronze medal.  Finally, Ashleigh Miah-Dodkin was in the girls +5’4 section and although Ashleigh was the same height as her opponents, she was at a big disadvantage being only 10 years old compared to some of the experienced 14 and 15 year olds who lined up.  Nevertheless, Ashleigh held her own to not only claim her first open Bronze medal but also scoring a head kick along the way.  Well done to all the girls and could the boys do any better…

Firstly Logan Wilkins took the mat and kept his cool to claim his first open title and the club’s second Gold Medal.  Jack Ward was in an awesome and menacing mood as he quickly dispatched all who stood in his way to claim his Gold medal and impressively without dropping a single point!  Another first timer was Harley Hurd who was also at a disadvantage with his height at just 10 years old, but still managed to claim his first open Bronze medal

Finally, Brandon Wilkins and Romahn Flemmings were closing out the day.  Brandon reached the final in his event and some dubious decisions cost him the victory, so Brandon took the Silver medal.  In the section above, Romahn couldn’t get motoring as he lost at the quarter-final stage but Brandon went one further to take the Bronze medal and the clubs 8th medal of the day.

Impressive performances all round and a well-deserved top spot in the medal table for the KBK team!
